ehow: Aluminum Garage Doors Vs. Steel

Since the invention of the automobile, the idea of the garage and subsequently, the garage door, has evolved to meet man's needs. There are several kind of garage doors made out of a variety of materials. Two of the most popular materials are aluminum and steel. Both come with advantages and disadvantages.

    Types

  1. A variety of garage door styles are available. Two of the more popular types of doors are sectional roll downs and tilt-ups. Many styles, like the carriage house door, are available at much higher prices. Roll downs are traditionally more convenient in most situations but tilt-ups are usually much less expensive. Most styles are available in aluminum and steel.
  2. Aluminum

  3. Aluminum garage doors are quite a popular option for homeowners. They come with many of the same advantages as steel, including the ability to be made to have the appearance of wood-grain. Aluminum garage doors are relatively inexpensive, are lightweight and will not rust. A disadvantage to owning an aluminum door is that they dent quite easily.
  4. Steel

  5. In terms of strength, steel doors are many times stronger than aluminum ones. Steel doors can be made with wood-grain patterns, giving them the appearance of a wood door without all the maintenance that goes into owning a wood door. These doors incur little amounts of weathering throughout the years. But it's not easy to repair dents in steel.
  6. Cost

  7. Aluminum garage doors are much more affordable than steel garage doors. However, steel garage doors are arguably higher quality. The average cost of a steel garage door set-up is between $750 and $1,200, installed. The average cost of an aluminum garage door set-up is between $400 and $700, installed.
  8. Mechanics

  9. A typical garage door operates on a system of tracks and rollers. The weight of a door gets balanced by torsion springs or extension springs. In a torsion system, springs unwind when the door is raised and wind up when the door is lowered. In an extension spring system, springs raise the door using a system of counterbalance cables and pulleys. More people are opting for their garage door to be mechanical. Garages can be opened and closed with the touch of a button. The materials used on the door, such as aluminum or steel, hold little bearing on the mechanics of a garage door itself. Since a steel door may weigh more than an aluminum one, springs would have to be adjusted accordingly.
